Do you want to create lasting change without relying on willpower? It starts by understanding how your brain resists change—and how to work with it instead of against it. Neuroscience shows that small, intentional shifts can rewire your habits faster than you think.
But what if you had a strategy that made change easier—one that worked for your brain, not against it?

Hack Your Brain
“Then I'll give up bread for Lent!”
...the teenage me huffed to my mother. Wisely, she pointed out, "You can't give up something you don't like for Lent!" She knew me better than I thought.
This past Wednesday marked the start of Lent, a symbolic time in many Christian traditions, representing Christ's 40 days in the desert, where he overcame temptation by the devil. It's designed to be a time of introspection and sacrifice.
Growing up, most people I knew gave up something for Lent: sweets for the kids, cigarettes and alcohol for the adults. Since I didn't eat many sweets, I knew that wouldn't go down well, hence the bread idea. Each year, my mother reminded us that just giving something up for a few weeks missed the entire point and overlooked the opportunity that Lent presented for personal growth. Which, when you think about it, it is exactly what happens when we are invited to face our own demons, like Christ did.
Thus, my mother encouraged us to take something on instead of giving up something. "Be kinder to people. Help out more," she suggested. At the time, we didn't get it. We needed to tell our schoolmates what we had "given up"; nobody would understand if we said we were doing more chores or helping old ladies cross the road!
The Science of Lasting Change
It was only as I got older that I came to realise the value of that lesson. Lent presents an opportunity, not just to deny ourselves but to lean into something that stretches us.
Neuroscience tells us that change is hard because the brain is wired for efficiency. It resists anything that disrupts established neural pathways. Habits, whether good or bad, are encoded deeply in the brain, making them feel automatic.
However, research shows that new habits take between 21 and 66 days to form. This is how long it takes for the brain to hardwire new behavioural pathways so they become part of our new default mode network.
The challenge? Willpower alone isn't enough. Your brain's prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making and self-control, gets tired quickly. This is why most people fail to stick to new habits after the initial excitement wears off.
So, how do we create lasting change? Learn how I am doing this below ........

The Power of Collective MomentumThis is where group accountability comes in.
When you commit to a new habit with others, your chances of success skyrocket. Studies show that people who have a community supporting their goals are significantly more likely to follow through.
Why? Because the human brain is wired for connection. Knowing that others are in it with you makes you far more likely to stay the course. We draw on the group's energy, and suddenly, the change feels less like a struggle and more like a shared experience.
So this Lent, even if you don't mark the time from a religious perspective, I invite you to consider the next 40 days as a powerful opportunity for growth.
Choose one area where you want to stretch, improve, or commit to something new and stick with it for the next seven weeks. You might be surprised by what happens.
