The agreement nobody remembers making
A new client sat across from me recently, on the edge of burnout. Work filled their every hour; there was no time for exercise, and barely any time left for the children. For them, it was a matter of fact, without a hint of justification or excuse. There were too many demands; they were burning out and losing themselves in the process. They could feel it costing their health and still could not see how to stop. The level of work required was non-negotiable to provide for the family. They had come to me hoping for a tool that would help or a new plan. What they knew for certain was that something had to change.
Client after client, the same theme resurfaces: a cycle on repeat. For some, it is a cycle of burnout, a break, a recovery, then burnout again. For others, money flows, then disappears, then flows again, or a relationship ends, a new one starts and then ends, until the client realises this is the same relationship, in a different body.
Listening to it, my experience tells me that there is a single explanation for all three: an Identity Agreement™ is running.
The human brain, in its early developmental years, builds a map of identity from experience, one prediction at a time. Its central task is keeping the person it is responsible for alive, and that includes staying connected to the people around them. Disconnection from a caregiver registers, instinctively, as a genuine risk. Very early, the brain learns what keeps connections intact and what threatens them, using that learning to predict what happens next. Over time, that early learning about connection and safety hardens into an identity, experienced and embodied rather than chosen. When the Identity Agreement™ surfaces as a thought, it sounds sensible, reasonable, entirely trustworthy, the kind of internal voice a person has no reason to question.
The cycle begins with the agreement. The moment a person sets a boundary, declines more work or asks for help, the brain reads the context of the moment against its old identity map and produces an internal argument that sounds entirely reasonable for returning to the familiar behaviour. The brain is doing precisely what it was built to do: preserving the identity it already trusts. That protective strategy produces the cycle, year after year.
Place your familiar cycles into the description above: the burnout cycle, the money cycle, the relationship cycle, or something else entirely that you keep returning to despite knowing better and trying harder.
Look for the feeling you recognise: the same story returning in a different year, with a new habit, a firmer boundary, and a fresh start that begins on a Monday with real intention behind it. Three weeks later, you are back to your old behaviour, and the strategy that promised to fix it proves to be a temporary patch.
Somewhere beneath that experience lies an Identity Agreement™, decided long before it had language, and still active. It has never been named.
Naming the Identity Agreement™ changes what becomes possible. Once a person can see the agreement rather than live inside it without question, the brain becomes able to consider other possibilities as equally true alongside it: connection surviving a boundary, the family being provided for without total self-sacrifice, safety existing on terms different from those set early on.
The shift, small as it sounds, is the actual mechanism of change. Self-sabotage is self-preservation, doing its job with outdated information.
